the lines do an excellent job of creating the appearance of 3D imagery, and the shading almost perfectly imitates light and shadow. The primary figure casts a bit of shadow, himself; one gets the feeling of standing before a great relic within a drafty old ruin. I've actually shivered a bit at phantom drafts appreciating this piece. If one tries to look through it while looking at it(just let your eyes lose focus), they would soon notice a sense of pulse to the background, and realize your imagination is making the light intensify and recede just a bit.
